If you turn a worry over and over in your mind, the worry can grow. Talking to someone about that worry can help you to work out exactly what is bothering you and help you explore ways of coping. Sometimes it can be easier to talk about personal issues to a professional who is independent of your friends and family. People come to therapy for a variety of reasons - because of difficult experiences or life changes such as a relationship breakdown, bereavement, illness or because they want help to overcome feelings of sadness, anxiety, anger, depression or low self-worth. Something might have happened in your past and now is the time to deal with it or you might simply want to offload to someone who will not judge you. Counselling can help you deal with specific problems, help cope with crises, improve relationships or help develop better ways of living. I am based at the Sirona Clinic, 27 Douglas West, Douglas Village, Cork. Please contact me, Caroline Crotty B.Soc.Sc. M.A. to make an appointment or to talk about the ways in which therapy can help you.

Welcome to my site. Firstly, let me assure me that I know how much courage it took to conduct the search that brought you here … and indeed how much more it can take to make the call. As a first step it is helpful if you acknowledge that to yourself. In the years that I have been a therapist I have yet to meet a client, who committed to therapy, that didn’t get some relief, some hope that their future could be different from their past which washed them up onto the lonely beach they found themselves on. I promise you that I know your pain, your loneliness, and your anxiety. You have made it this far ... make the call …

Maybe counselling or psychotherapy was the last thing you ever wanted. Perhaps you don’t like talking about your problems or you think no one can help you anyway. Maybe you’ve tried it in the past and it did not work. Don’t give up – Alison can work with you to turn your life around in the following ways: • Reduce anxiety – generalised anxiety, panic attacks, fears, phobias, obsessions (OCD), lack of confidence or overwhelming stress and pressure can be treated effectively. • Break the cycle of depression – even chronic depression can often be lifted quickly and the meaning and joy returned to life. • Resolve trauma – tackle the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder, however severe, in a safe way. • Improve sleep – all emotional problems are made worse with poor sleep. • Manage anger – anger disorders damage health, increase the likelihood of an early death and cause enormous misery among relatives, colleagues and innocent bystanders. • Stop addictive behaviour – people can be freed from all forms of addiction – alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex, TV and computer games, eating disorders – providing they want to make the effort to stop. • Assist with medical conditions – many conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, psoriasis, eczema, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic pain and migraine, have an emotional component. Stressful events often trigger an outbreak because emotions affect your health. • Improve relationships – relationship difficulties are often self-perpetuating because our beliefs and reactions to one another trigger patterns of behaviour which stop us solving them. When couples want to stay together but are having problems, talking them over with a psychotherapist can help.
