NCT OBD Testing

An On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) system is a computerized network within a vehicle that monitors its performance and detects any issues. By gathering data from sensors throughout the vehicle, it can notify the driver of potential problems before they become serious.

Starting from June 21st, OBD testing will be added to the National Car Test (NCT) as a new inspection requirement. This will be gradually introduced. At first, if the OBD system detects an error code, the vehicle will still receive an "Advisory Pass."

The inspection process is simple and fast. The NCT inspector will connect an OBD scanner to the car's OBD port, also called the Data Link Connector (DLC), which is typically located beneath the steering wheel, though it may also be in the glove box.

This scanner will quickly determine if any error codes are present, helping the inspector identify any potential issues with the vehicle.

To ensure the inspection goes smoothly, we ask that customers:

- Unlock and empty their glove compartment before the NCT.
- Remove any devices connected to the OBD port prior to the inspection.

The OBD scanner will check for the following:

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN):
The inspector will confirm that the VIN from the OBD scanner matches the one on the vehicle. If there is a discrepancy, it won't lead to failure, but the OBD VIN reading will be noted on the Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR).

Odometer Reading:
The inspector will record the vehicle’s odometer reading and verify it with the OBD scanner. Both readings will be noted on the VIR provided to the customer.

Electronic Braking System (EBS):
Any error codes related to the EBS will be listed on the VIR after the inspection.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS):
Similarly, any ABS error codes will be recorded on the VIR.

Although vehicles with error codes will initially receive an "Advisory Pass," it is highly recommended that these issues are addressed by a qualified mechanic. There's no need to return for a follow-up inspection for these specific items alone.

It's a good idea to have your garage or mechanic perform an OBD scan before bringing the vehicle for the NCT to address any concerns in advance.
