Ulysses Rare Books (formerly Cathach Books) was founded by our late father, Enda Cunningham, back in 1969. At that time he was trading part-time and issuing catalogues only. Some years later after moving from Donegal to Dublin he opened his first shop in George Street Market Arcade. It was a small shop and he was more than capable of running it himself. However after two years he felt it would be a good idea to move to a better location, and in early in 1988 an opportunity arose to move to Duke Street, just off Dublin fashionable Grafton Street. It was then that my sister Aisling and I decided to join him. In April of that year, we became full-time booksellers.

Sandyford Road, DUBLIN 16, Dublin, D16

(01) 216 9160
The company was originally founded in 1819 as Johnston & Co. Since that time it has existed through some of the most exciting events in Irish history and has grown to become the main supplier in Ireland of books, newspapers and magazines. It was in the heady days of Parnell and the Land League that Charles Eason and his son acquired the business from W.H. Smith in 1886. During the 19th century, the company was directly involved in the industrial and literary revolutions occurring throughout the country. Our railway bookstalls became popular, but this depended on a growing literacy rate. More people could read and so written information became much more important to the country as a whole.
