Hi. We bought eight Hy-Line pollet hens from James and Ann Ryan in early September 2012. Unfortunately, our dog got a tasty dinner with one, so we are now left with seven. We were told that once daylight hours dipped below 14 per day that we ought to expect a reduction in egg-laying, unless we installed artificial lighting within the hen-house. Within a week of getting the hens, we were getting six or seven eggs per day - hitting 100% laying on probably six days per week. The amazing thing about these hens is this: they have continued ceaselessly producing six or seven eggs each day, every day, since then! AND... this is without any form of artificial lighting being used in the hen-house. ALSO... egg weight rose to an average of 60g within a month of their starting laying, and this 60g-average has been maintained CONSTANTLY over the past four months. Having been raised on a farm that had plenty of hens, I am finding these Hy-Line hens just startling in their egg production, temperament, health, appetite, and beauty (we have three ultra-appealing whites, and four browns.) Finally, the delicious flavour of the eggs - be it boiled, fried, scrambled, or in baking - is just something that takes me back nearly half-a-century to what used to be long-lost treasures of blissful childhood and farmhouse flavours!
