Description

The Kumon Method of Learning was developed in 1954 by Toru Kumon, both a parent and gifted teacher from Japan. He discovered his own son, Takeshi, was not fulfilling his potential in maths at school and so created worksheets for him to do at home every day. We still stand firm to the founding principles outlined by Toru Kumon today.

Company description

The Kumon Study Centre in Carrigaline, established in October this year, is available to students of all ages and learning abilities. Through the Kumon programmes, we aim to bring out the best in every child. The Kumon Method helps develop strong study habits such as: concentration, perseverance, time management and a positive attitude toward learning from mistakes. The maths Programme develops skills to help students progress from counting through to calculus. The English programme starts with phonics and progresses through to advanced reading comprehension. Both programmes give children foundational abilities to ensure they are successful in all subjects at school. We create individualised lesson plans so each student works at a comfortable pace. Students attend class at the centre up to twice a week and are given worksheets to complete on days they don’t. The daily worksheets take up to 30 mins per subject, and develop ability and proficiency in small manageable steps. Students are encouraged to overcome problems they come across themselves, helping them to develop independent learning skills and prevent over-reliance on a teacher, in this sense Kumon differs from traditional teaching methods. The centre itself is a calm, focussed environment where independence and concentration are encouraged.
