An informal evaluation can be easily administered in most cases without the child even being aware of the assessment. After the evaluation, time will be spent analysing and discussing the findings with the parents and formulating a strategy for any future sessions deemed necessary. This assesment and discussion with parents usually lasts about one and one quarter hours
The initial evaluation or assessment is intended to add to your own observations and to highlight any difficulties which your child may be experiencing with communication. A typical evaluation is carried out when your child is ready and relaxed. It will include assessment of: The ability to participate in the evaluation The muscles used for speaking as well as an assessment of speech and voice production The ability to understand spoken language The ability to repeat words and sentences, to name pictures, recall specific words, describe a picture, answer questions and engage in conversation the ability to express thoughts by use of language The ability to recall information
