In many cases, attic floor will have joists that are 4" to 6" high. This is not sufficient space in which to install insulation material that will bring the level of insulation up to Building Regulations standards (300mm). In order to have a sufficient level of insulation in your attic underneath an attic flooring, you have to raise the floor by installing 4", 6" or even 8" battens to maintain the same level of insulation across the attic.
