Enjoy the last of the mild weather this week as a spell of wintry weather is on the way.

Although most of the country has been enjoying an unseasonably warm mid-term, Met Eireann warns of some unsettled weather expected for the weekend.

Colder conditions will develop overnight on Friday and there will be heavy showers mostly in western and northern areas.

Saturday will be a typical Irish day with the forecaster suggesting it will be a 'cold, breezy and showery day with sunny spells in all areas'.

However, the occasional heavy rain will be wintry in places, with hail showers and some thundery downpours, especially near Atlantic coasts.

Saturday night will turn very cold with widespread frost and heavy wintry showers continuing in the west.

Sunday will be a drier and brighter day with good sunshine, after some morning showers clear away. Again, it will be cold, with frost for a time on Sunday night.

Early indications suggest that Monday will be a cold, windy and wet day.
